Confession

My birthday was yesterday. In honor of the occasion I have a confession to make.

It’s a big one.

It might get me kicked out of the mom club, if there were such a thing as a mom club.

I don’t like coffee.

I’ve never been to Starbucks. I wouldn’t know what to order if I were to go. We have a coffee maker, but it’s sitting on a kitchen shelf gathering dust. I’ve had a cappuccino here or there, made from instant powder bought at the grocery store, but it isn’t something I crave. The warmth is soothing on brisk, early mornings, but I could do the same with hot chocolate. And hot chocolate comes with marshmallows.

I feel like as an aging parent, though, especially a mom of 3 little kids, I’m expected to drink coffee. That it’s weird not to. Like the commercials with a woman in slippers and bedhead, eyes still heavy with sleep. “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee.” I’m supposed to revel in the aroma and sigh heavily into that initial sip of mocha. That first cup, an instant transformation into supermom.

Maybe that’s why I’ve never earned my superpowers.

I feel like a fraud.

A 31 year old fraud.

Man, I’m old.

I’m right there with you. I’ve never been a coffee drinker, not even in college when I was in the engineering school and pulling all-nighters. I do occasionally hit starbucks for a tea (chair or green/mint) or a vanilla steamer, but no coffee for this kid. Plus, they say it doesn’t really make a difference in your alertness, just kills your caffeine headache. ;) I guess we can be frauds together!

@jesser, The caffeine usually worsens my migraines. Though I do drink soda.

I do not drink coffee either!! Every 6 months to a year, I try to make myself a cup again.. But by time I add enough sugar, creamer and pizazz to it to make it NOT TASTE LIKE AN ASSHOLE it is 600 calories and I just can’t make myself drink it! HOWEVER, I will drink the sweetened, flavored frozen coffee drinks if I am given the chance.. But NEVER give SB or any other over priced Coffee Franchise my money!

Happy Birthday! I hope you had a great weekend!

I’ve never been a coffee drinker either – can’t stand the stuff. I do, however, enjoy a frozen frappucino from Starbucks. Yum!

Totally with you…not a coffee drinker at all! I will get a latte or something else that is like 99% milk, but straight coffee…eww.

Never acquired a taste for beer, either!

@Krystyn, I don’t like beer, either. Not that I’ve ever really given it a try, only a sip or two. What might be even more shocking is that I’ve never tried wine, ever. Wine cooler, yes, but I don’t think that’s the same.

I don’t like it either. Tastes like DIRT. The only way I’ll drink it is if it’s cold, has ice cream in it, and WAAAAY too many calories to even consider consuming on a daily basis. I do however LOVE the smell of brewing coffee. heh

@Jen, When I was growing up, I would beg for a sip of my mom’s coffee. She’d always say “You don’t want a drink of this, it tastes like mud.” I finally had a sip and what do you know, it tastes like mud.

Happy birthday for yesterday. I can tell you first that coffee drinking does not define Motherhood, even though I love my Starbucks latte but even ore definitely I can tell you that 31 is NOT OLD!!! Trust me, when you get to be my age, almost 47, and go back and read this post you will laugh so hard at this thought of 31 being old you will cry :-)

@Aging Mommy, Thank you for the happy birthday! I know 31 isn’t that old. It’s just when I think back, almost HALF my lifetime ago is when I graduated high school. It makes me feel a little old.

    Happy Birthday you young thing!

I never drank coffee until I was a mom. It actually disagrees with me and makes my acid reflux act up, but rare is the day that I can make it through the morning chaos without a cup.

Happy birthday! I hope you had cake.

I drink tea. Not coffee. Occasionally a bit of some expensive, highly flavored “coffee drink,” but mostly just tea.

    Happy Belated Birthday!

My husband is in a profession that requires long hours, but he has never touched coffee. He doesn’t like it at all. His choice for staying up and alert – gum.

I am a chai latter drinker, but don’t mind the occasional coffee. Now drinking water is a habit I need to adopt, but haven’t.

Add me to the growing not-a-coffee-person list. I actually did drink coffee every so often before my pregnancy, but gave it up once I found out I was expecting, then got this weird, dramatic aversion to even the smell! To this day, even the thought of drinking coffee…blegh.

I love coffee-flavor though. Coffee ice cream, yum…

Happy birthday! I’m thirty-one as well (actually, I’ll be celebrating my 3rd 29th birthday this summer!)
