Fashionista
My daughter likes to play dress up. She doesn’t care a lot for most toys, sure she’ll snag the remote control or try to steal whatever her brothers are playing with. Let her loose on a drawer full of clothes, however, and she’ll satisfy herself for hours. Pants and shirts. Socks. Shoes. Never dresses.
If it’s pink or frilly, she’ll toss it aside with disdain. When we go out, I am already waged in a battle over acceptable attire. One that I tend to lose. I’d like her in a sundress, especially when it’s hot outside. “No, no!”, she protests. She wants jeans and a t-shirt.
To be completely honest, if it were entirely up to Abby, she’d most likely be draped in her brother’s wardrobe sized far too large for her small frame. Holding the pants up with her hands and shirts adorned with Spiderman that hang down to her knees. Rolled hems and arms lost in sleeves. My girl, my lone daughter, the one who I thought I’d get to prettify, prefers to dress like the boys.
When we’re home, she’s free to flaunt her funny sense of style. Droopy jeans, baseball tees, floppy hats. Mismatched socks, multiple layers. A pair of shorts on top of purple tights. This shirt, no that shirt, how about both? Inside out or backwards, but put on painstakingly without assistance. Iron Man and Power Ranger costumes from Halloweens past. The most beautiful superhero I know. She’ll take it off, just to put it right back on. It all winds up in a heap on the floor by the end of the day, like a bomb detonated in fabric. Except for the dresses. They remain pushed aside in her drawer.

Too funny. That’s like me when I was a kid. No dresses. Ick. Terrible. My girl LOVES dresses, ones that swirl, thank you very much (not the tie-dye one mommy thinks is so adorable) but she loves tons of other clothes too. And she loves being rough and tumble and messy. We keep joking my mom and sister are going to have to tell her how to put on makeup … but it isn’t really a joke.

@jesser, Makeup?! I thought we still had years and years before we to think about makeup. Oh man.

It sounds like she knows her style. I didn’t really like dresses that much until I was 30 (and even then I sometimes feel awkward in them). My daughter on the other hand is such a girly girl it’s like she’s not even from me. Personality is such an interesting thing.

@Marilyn, I’m still not a super fan of dresses. Like you said, I feel awkward in them, too.

Adorable…and my kind of girl. People would probably be surprised to know this but I am not a princess frou frou type at all. Love that she prefers her own quirky stuff! And just think…when she is 16, you’ll be glad she picked the baggy jeans instead of a too short dress and halter top!
Best,
Tina
P.S. I nominated you!

@Tina, I’m definitely hoping her current fashion sense sticks around until she’s at least 18. Possibly forever.
Thank you!

One of my twins is the same. I’m sure they’ll both change by the time they’re teenagers!

@Catch the Kids, Don’t say that! Multiple upon multiple layers will come in handy when she’s a teen.

Individuality is important. She probably finds jeans and tees to be more practical and comfortable when she’s busy playing.
One of my sons who play dress up with his sisters, and wear the princess dresses – that behavior isn’t quite as socially acceptable as the other way around!

@Mrs.Mayhem, I’ll sometimes find my 4 yo in one of his sister’s shirts or dresses, which are still like shirts on him. Not only is it pink, but it’s also too small and tight. It’s quite a look.

There was a bleak few months when my daughter was two when she refused to wear anything but a Superman t-shirt paired with a tutu. We got a LOT of funny looks.

@TheKitchenWitch, I’m sure some of those funny looks were admiration. It sounds cute.

Ha! love this! Itty Bitty is all about her big brothers stuff too. No cute Easter purse for her, nope, she prefers to carry around a Lightening McQueen backpack.

@mamacomedy, My daughter doesn’t even know what a purse is yet. She is all about the Lightening McQueen, though.

We’re the opposite. It’s all tulle all the time. And, oh, how I wish it weren’t! But I’m saving that battle for another day. (Another year??)

She is clearly going to be a fashionista is what it is! It is all the rage these days for girls to dress as boys, just look at celebrity children!
