Her Green Baby
At first, she was like MacGuyver with a minimally damp wet wipe and a green crayon. It took me a few minutes to realize what exactly Abby was doing. Then I noticed her clumsy hands fumbling to wrap the cloth around the colorful stick. When that didn’t go as intended, she carried her items to me in earnest. “Baby!”, she shrieked.
All of the dolls sitting untouched and she’s babying a crayon.
I played along and swaddled it convincingly enough. She then held the crayola stick tenderly by her face. Until her “baby” fell out of it’s enclosure.
Maybe her father could do better, I’m sure she expected, so she tried to get him involved in the game next. She walked up to him and demanded, “Daddy! Baby!”.
Clearly not paying attention, he wondered, “What?”.
“She wants you to wrap the crayon up like a baby”, I told him flippantly.
“Why would I wrap a crayon up like a baby?”, he asked, bewildered.
Why is the sky blue? Why does ice cream taste so good? Why do the kids go batcrap insane an hour before bedtime? Why ask questions? It is what it is. “Because she wants you to.” He should’ve known that answer by now. What more of a reason do you need?
Though I don’t know what he was complaining about. I’m the one who was later forced to snuggle the “baby”. All he had to do was wrap it once in a wet wipe.

It’s crazy what they decide to play with sometimes. Tabby did the very same thing with a tea candle that was in our bathroom. And it went on for several weeks every time she was in there. It’s cute, but also kinda weird.

@jesser, It is crazy, especially with all the toys and dolls she has. We can say, though, that at least they have a healthy imagination.

Maybe she really wants a green baby.
So far my kids are very literal with what things are or aren’t. I wonder if they’ll always be that way. Perhaps your daughter has an artistic nature.

@Marilyn, My oldest is very literal, too. Even when I make him draw or color (yes, I have to MAKE him), I always have to tell him what to draw. He role plays a lot, though. Another example of how every kid has their own *thing*.

Imaginative play at it’s very best
It’s like when the big present you’ve excitedly wrapped for your child gets opened and instead of falling on it in delight they play instead with the packaging
We have stopped buying conventional toys as my daughter never wants to play with any of them, preferring as she does her collections of stones, feathers and other odd artifacts as well as playing with her feet and ours (yes, our feet now have names and personalities too)

@Aging Mommy, Every year, for birthdays or Christmas, we always tease that we’re just going to get the kids a big box. Because that’s what they always want to play with most. Of course, we haven’t actually done that yet, but I’m sure they’d love it.

I bet it turned her fingers green. Mine would strip the baby of its “clothes” and then break it into tiny pieces. Hence no unclaimed crayons in this house.

@Kelly, Why do kids insist on taking the paper off their crayons?! I don’t get it.

“Because she wants to” that pretty sums up my son too. He doesn’t just because he wants to, doesn’t matter if they make sense or not. I actually love that about him. Most of the time

Too cute! My little one is into babies too, but she’s still pretty literal. Anything smaller then her is ‘baby?’ I love your letter to her too. Beautiful!
