Who Needs the Right Foot When You Have a Left?

The beginning of the school year is growing near and we’ve begun getting Jedi ready in an attempt to start off on the right foot. This involves a lot of primping. Yesterday was spent shopping for clothes. Then, we brought him in to Salón de Casa for a haircut. In other words, we chopped it ourselves.

We purchased a hair-cutting kit a few months back. It seemed easy enough and a lot cheaper in the long run than visiting a salon for every trim. This past weekend was our second attempt at shearing the boy’s strands. Which means we may have gotten a bit cocky with the equipment.

All was going well at first. A simple buzz through with the razor and accompanied length attachment makes the job almost idiot proof. Until I starting thinking we were the next step to professionals.

“There’s an ear-trimming attachment here. We didn’t use it last time and the hair around his ears bothered me. Why don’t we try it?”, I suggested to J. Famous last words.

Really, it didn’t come out that bad. If you don’t pay any attention to the giant bald spot on the left side of his head, anyway. I’m sure it can be covered up with a hat. Or big pretty bow. Maybe he’ll start a new trend for the elementary set. I’m just hoping it grows back a bit in the few weeks left before school starts.

On the plus side, there’s no hair around his ears to bother me now.

Oh crap!! Who would have thought you could get so close?? Kids hair usually grows pretty fast … maybe you can slip him some extra vitamins. ;)

@jesser, There’s a left and a ride ear attachment and I think J used the wrong one for that side of his head. Thus, the really close edge buzzed all his hair off. He’s got 3 weeks to grow it back.

LOL. Ah…I know this one well. The first haircut I gave my Little Miss was a bang trim at 6 months and it was so horribly lopsided and choppy that I was forbidden by her dad to ever touch her hair again. EVER.

But you know what they say about hair – it grows back! :)

This is why I politely refused when Matthew asked me to cut his hair yesterday – I’d like to stay married, thanks. :)

@Angella, I cut my husband’s hair once about 7 years ago. He’s been shaving his head ever since. LOL.

Oh my! That is very brave! I do cut my daughter’s hair because I just know a trip to a hair salon would be a complete nightmare, far worse than any doctor’s office visit :-) But her hair is curly and very fine and is very easy and quick to cut and so so far, so good. I’m not sure I would attempt to cut a boy’s hair really short with complex equipment to boot!

@Aging Mommy, But that’s the thing, it’s not brave! The equipment is pretty much fool-proof! Unless my husband and I are the fools in question, apparently.

And I’m the opposite. My daughter doesn’t have enough hair yet, but in no way am I brave enough to try cutting it when she does. There’s a lot more style that goes into girls hair than boys.

I’ve often thought about this myself having three boys and the barber wants to charge $17/haircut!

Where’s the picture? I want to see that bald spot to know if I could live with damage like that. ;-)

@Cathy, As long as you FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, unlike what we did, you’ll be fine. And I thought of taking a picture, but I figured the story would be embarrassing enough.

My husband does the hair cutting around here. I’m willing to cut bangs but using the buzz-thingy is too much responsibility for me.

The same thing happened to my husband the day before his third grade pictures when his mom took him to the bargain-priced barber training school for a cut. Let me tell you, those pictures get a good ol’ belly laugh from the family ever year. And, 25 years later, my husband has (finally) gotten over the embarrassment and says it was a good way to build his character. =>

@Stacia, So… there’s always that. Ha! Seriously though, this is why I haven’t taken a picture of Jedi after the mishap. I don’t need to build his character at only 6 years of age.

Oh geez. I have to laugh because I did the exact same thing to my husband’s hair…in the back of his head. The thing is, I am pretty capable at cutting his hair. It only requires trimming with the electric trimmer, on setting #3. However, he asked me one morning when I was really tired and really sick (pregnant). So he had taken off the guard and I thought, “Oh, maybe he wants all the hair shaved off.” Um, yeah, he didn’t. Needless to say, I made a big mistake. My husband, being the awesome guy he is, laughed it off. Thank goodness.

@Amber, I cut my husband’s hair once, though without the trimmers. It was so bad, he had to just shave his head after. And he’s been shaving his head ever since. If we had the trimmers, he might still have hair.

I’ve trimmed the edges around my husband’s hair a few times and made a few mistakes. It’s just hair – it will grow back. That’s what I told him – I think that reasoning works better with children than adults.
