Mealtimes with kids can be, well, interesting. Mine, especially my 7 year old daughter, are now at the age where they’re so worried they’re missing a moment of play time that they can barely take a minute to eat. Thus, it’s important to make the meal, and even the table setting, a fun time, too.
When it comes to a fun meal, what could be more amusing than Campbell’s Soup featuring Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory? Found at Target, this soup features fun new pasta shapes of your kids’ favorite characters and has no MSG added. Be sure to look for all 3 unique labels featuring Dory, Nemo and Hank!
To go with our soup, and another fun snack option found at Target, are the Goldfish® Special Edition! Cheddar Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory Crackers. It’s the delicious taste of Goldfish crackers that I know my kids love in special edition colors that are sourced from plants.
It’s a finding delicious winner of a snack and meal combination!
Kids can be tricky, however. So to make sure mealtime has their full attention, I also wanted to make some fun placemats. Not just any placemats, Tic Tac Toe Felt Placemats! The Goldfish crackers are perfect as our game token, and you can munch as you play.
For these Tic Tac Toe Felt Placemats, you’ll need a few different colors of felt. We used blue for the background, a bright pinkish-purple foreground, yellow for the sun, and a violet flower.
I cut a flower shape out of the violet felt by simply cutting a circle then trimming in some rounded edges. The flower was then sewn onto the pinkish-purple foreground color. For the sun, cut a ¼ of a large circle from the yellow felt, then sew it to the corner of the background color. Large stitches across the sun and through a part of the blue makes it look like sunrays.
Once your decorations are set, it’s time to make your placemat pocket. Leave the blue background piece of felt whole and cut a strip away from the bottom of the pinkish-purple foreground color so it’s smaller than the background. Glue the three sides into place then sew those three sides to secure. And your Tic Tac Toe Felt Placemat now holds all of your game pieces safely in place!
Speaking of game pieces, you’ll need to cut 4 strips for your tic tac toe board as well as 5 game tokens for both players, because you’re not going to use Goldfish crackers all the time, unfortunately. We just did simple circles in 2 different colors.
- felt in blue, pinkish-purple, violet, yellow, black, orange, and light green
- needle and thread in pink, violet, and orange
For your Tic Tac Toe Felt Placemat, first form a flower shape out of the piece of violet felt and sew it onto the pinkish-purple felt. Then cut a sun shape out of the yellow and sew it onto the top corner of the blue felt.
Trim some of the bottom away from the pinkish-purple so it’s smaller than the blue. Glue only sides of the sides and then sew the same three sides, leaving the top free, for the pocket.
Cut 4 strips out of the black felt for your tic tac toe game board. Cut out 5 game token apiece for each player from the orange and green felt.
I made this one for my daughter, but you could easily switch the decorative extras and colors up for boys, too. Not only is this a great placemat at home, but since it has a pocket to hold all of it’s pieces, you could easily take it with you to a restaurant, too. No more before meal meltdowns!
