Abby, my 6 year old daughter, likes to play with dolls and be creative and watch her brothers play video games, particularly Minecraft, but she doesn’t play many games herself. Probably because her brothers are always taking over the gaming devices. Although we really didn’t have many video games that she could easily play or was even interested in. Now we do, however, with the recent addition of Tomodachi Life and Animal Crossing™: New Leaf.
Tomodachi Life is one that my kids have been asking for. In this Nintendo game for 3DS/2DS systems, you have the ability to build and customize your own island with it’s cast of characters. Start off by creating Mii characters and customize all aspects of their their appearances, then bring them to life by customizing their personalities and voices.
There are all sorts of activities that you can do with your Mii characters as the game progresses. For instance, play a variety of mini-games with your islanders, or watch them perform songs live on stage. You can also solve their problems to help them level up and unlock new gift items that you can give your Mii characters.
In Animal Crossing™: New Leaf, a Nintendo game also for 3DS or 2DS systems, you play in real time as the new mayor of your town. Turning over a new leaf as mayor, you get to perform tasks that will directly affect your town. With decisions to make such as whether shops open later or earlier than usual, and also select public works projects to build around town, including bridges, benches, clocks and new shops, too, you have a busy job. Every part of this game is customizable as you not only get to build the town, but you also customize your character’s clothes and house. As the mayor, you have complete control!
Both of these games require just enough creativity with directions simple enough for my 6 year old gamer girl to play confidently. She did need a bit of help from her brother to get started, but he wanted to watch anyway. Together, they had a fun time making up songs to perform in Tomodachi Life and building up their town in Animal Crossing™: New Leaf.
Then, once she finally decided it was time for a break, he quickly took over. Of course.
