Molars Suck

My kids never get sick. And I realize that by making such bold a declaration I’ve probably just subjected them to a bout of pneumonia or mad cow disease. It’s true, though. They’ve never even had an ear infection. We’ve been very lucky.

This also means that when a child of mine does fall ill, I get a little panicky. Especially now with DEATH BY SWINE dominating every news headline.

Abby awoke with a temperature of barely over 100 Friday morning. She didn’t have any other physical symptoms, other than tired and clingy. She just wasn’t acting like my playful, joyous little girl.

After calling J, I set up an appointment with her pediatrician that afternoon. I have never, not once, ever taken my child in for a reason other than a normal checkup. I’m not bragging here, just stating. Because while I’d like to believe it’s because my kids have immunities of steel, I know it has more to do with the fact that they’ve yet to be saturated in germs at a daycare or school. And when they finally are, god help us all.

At this point, I began to think I was overreacting. I’m going to feel ridiculous if my child has a fever from teething, I thought.

The pediatrician’s office was very nice and accommodating. Her temperature climbed slightly to 101, but everything else appeared normal and clear. There was no mention of DEATH BY SWINE (or cow or goat, even), which is always a plus.

As it turns out, the pediatrician diagnosed my daughter with a fever. From teething. Go figure. A touch ridiculous, yes. Considering we’ve been fighting the blasted thing all weekend, though, a visit to the ER would have been even more so.

Teething

While Abby has had her first set of teeth, the front bottom 2, for a few months now, the top 2 didn’t poke through until just recently. Why do they have to come in multiples, anyway? Forget waterboarding, doesn’t this seem like torture? In any case, this explains the constanty dripping faucet of drool, an incessant need for munching, inflamed gums, waking too many times in the middle of the night to keep track of (and too tired to try), and an I’m mad and I’m not going to take it anymore attitude. And here I thought all of that was just for fun, or to make Mom bonkers. My third kid in and I’m still surprised by the whole teething deal.

Good news: 4 chompers down. Bad news: there’s a mouthful yet to go.
